How to Change Your Car Engine Oil
Changing your engine oil is one of the most important parts of regular car maintenance. Fresh oil helps lubricate the engine and can help reduce wear.
What You’ll Need
- The correct engine oil for your car
- A new oil filter
- Drain pan
- Socket or spanner
- Funnel
- Gloves
- Jack and axle stands or ramps, if required
1. Prepare the Car
Park on a level surface, switch off the engine and engage the handbrake. Allow the engine to cool enough to work safely.
2. Drain the Old Oil
Locate the oil drain plug underneath the engine. Place the drain pan underneath, carefully remove the plug and allow the old oil to drain completely.
3. Replace the Oil Filter
Remove the old oil filter. Lightly coat the rubber seal of the new filter with fresh oil, then fit the new filter according to the manufacturer's instructions.
4. Replace the Drain Plug
Clean the drain plug and refit it securely. Do not overtighten it.
5. Add the New Oil
Open the oil filler cap on top of the engine. Using a funnel, add the correct type and amount of oil specified in your vehicle's owner's manual.
6. Check the Oil Level
Wait a few minutes, then check the level using the dipstick. Add more oil if necessary, but do not overfill.
7. Check for Leaks
Start the engine for a few minutes, switch it off and check underneath the car for leaks. Check the oil level again after allowing the oil to settle.
Important
Always follow your vehicle manufacturer's instructions for the correct oil type, quantity and service interval. Used engine oil should be collected and disposed of at an appropriate recycling or waste facility.
A little regular maintenance can go a long way towards keeping your car running smoothly.
